McCune Students Earn 1st Place Honors in Scholarship Contest!

by Warren McGown

State of Kansas Scholarship Contest 2008

(Emporia State University)

McCune 7th and 8th grade students earned 1st place honors as a school, while nine placed individually in the Emporia State of Kansas Scholarship Contest.  Students from 165 schools throughout the state recently participated in the 86th annual contest.  This is one way that ESU recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by Kansas students in grades 7 through 12.  McCune students competed in Class G which is for those schools with an enrollment of 60 or less in the 7th and 8th grades.  Out of 57 schools competing in Class G, McCune placed 1st.  Their teachers believe it is really a testament to the strong work ethic these students possess.  "They had been taking a lot of tests lately, but still took the competition seriously and put forth an honest effort when asked to do so," said their teachers.  "It shows how much pride they put into everything they set out to do."

At first the students didn't realize how big an accomplishment this was.  Once they started asking questions and realized what had actually happened they became really excited.  With only 23 students total in the 7th and 8th grades, it is likely they were competing against schools that had double the amount of students that McCune has.  Not only did nine of the 18 students who tested earn a place in our class but Kyle Stewart earned 3rd place while Austin Egbert and Jalen Merrell received honorable mention at the state level of competition which included the entire 165 schools participating.

Great Job! & Keep Up The Good Work!
