State Tourney Caps Strong Season

by Gary Leiker

The Southeast High School forensics squad capped another successful season with a competitive outing at the Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 3A State Forensics Tournament held Saturday, May 3 at Wichita East High School.  Thirteen students attended the tournament, competing in both the championship and festival divisions.  It was the largest contingent of students Southeast has traveled to state.  Michael Windsor and Brandon McGehee added to their season accomplishments with strong performances at the state tournament.

Competing in his last high school tournament before graduating in two weeks, senior Michael Windsor advanced to finals in Extemporaneous Speaking.  Michael ended the competition as the fourth best speaker in the state in class 3A.  Michael will conclude an impressive high school career when he attends the national tournament this June in Las Vegas.

Junior Brandon McGehee, the only student from Southeast to compete at the state tournament in two events, advanced to semifinals in Humorous Solo Acting before being eliminated from the tournament.  Brandon's season will extend into the summer when he joins Michael at the national tournament in Las Vegas.

"The end of the year is always a time to reflect," observed coach Gary Leiker.  "It was another good year, and I am happy for all of the students on the squad and what they were able to accomplish individually and as a team.  It will be hard to replace the seniors, but I'm already looking forward to seeing what next year's squad will be able to accomplish."
