McCune 7th Grade Visits Historic Destinations

by Tessa Robin

On April 30th Mrs. Elrod's 7th grade class took off for Coffeville,KS to take a look at some historical sites. They visited The Dalton Museum, The Brown Mansion, & went into the banks which The Dalton Gang tried to rob. After about an hour bus ride, the class finally arrived at The Dalton Museum. First they watched a movie telling the story of The Dalton Gang, then they looked around the museum at photos, guns, documents and other things relating to The Dalton Gang. Something interesting that was found in the museum was a gun that was donated by someone from McCune. Then they stopped at the gift shop where wooden guns, necklaces, & other items were purchased.

Vetache, Justin, Tessa, and Alex step into the past by losing their current identity and taking on another.

After looking through the museum, the students & Mrs. Elrod headed to the banks where the robberies took place. The students had a great time exploring!  Seeing first hand what things used to be like was very interesting to some students. They were amazed at the lack of technology and other luxuries we have now days.  After taking a few photos along the way....it was time for lunch. Everyone had a choice of McDonalds or Long John Silvers. After a few Big Macs, some fish & a lot of talking the 7th graders were on there way to the Brown Mansion.

The 7th graders arrived at the Brown Mansion burned of some energy generated during lunch by running around in the backyard of the mansion while others just explored at a more leisurely pace. When it came time for the tour...their tour guide, Jackie, was of excellent help giving the history of the Brown Mansion. They started out in the basement, getting to see Mr. Brown's tool shed, the butler's quarters, the laundry room, the wine making room, Mrs. Brown's pottery room & even a one-lane bowling alley was amazing. The next level up they got to explore the kitchen, dining room, living room, the main entrance, and the lean-to. Moving up a flight of stairs they visited Mr. & Mrs. Brown's bedroom, their daughter's bedroom, Mr. Brown's office, the maid's rooms& a few guest bedrooms. On the last level a few height worry students were glad this was the last floor. This was mainly just the ballroom where Brown's Balls were held & still are every two years. Different students enjoyed different rooms, many questions arose about the tour, but the whole mansion was enjoyed. After the tour the 7th graders stopped at the gift shop where postcards, rings, necklaces, & other items were purchased just like the tour before.

After a long day of historical fun the 7th grade & Mrs. Elrod got back on the bus for an hour trip back while enjoying Twizzler's and water provided by Mrs.Elrod.
