SJHS Chess Team takes 2nd place at Chanute tournament

The Southeast Junior High School Chess Team took second place in a tournament at Chanute this past Saturday (November 8, 2014). Eight teams and 34 students participated in the Kindergarten through 8th grade division, with Southeast capturing both 2nd and 3rd place in individual play.

“It was a very intense tournament from start to finish,” says Coach Ryan Hizey. “Southeast Junior High brought home their second 2nd place team trophy for the year falling just short of Royster Middle School. I have been thrilled with how our team is doing so far this year and cannot wait to see what happens the rest of the season.

The top 20 participants receive medals and Southeast had three players who did so. Dakota Tyree took second place after winning 5 out of his 6 games, Hunter Chrysler took third place, and Lillian Chrysler took 20th.

Chess Team Results: Trophies given to the top 3 teams. Points are based on the top 4 players during a tournament. Hizey said Royster was split into three separate teams because of numbers. 1st – Royster Middle School, Chanute: 17.5 points. 2nd – Southeast Junior High: 14.5 points. 3rd – Royster Middle School A: 12.5 points. 4th – Royster Middle School B: 12.5 points. 5th – North Lawn Elementary, Neodesha: 12 points. 6th – Erie Elementary, Erie: 9.5 points. 7th – Galena Junior High, Galena, MO: 7 points. 8th – Galesburg Middle School, 4 points.

Southeast Individual Results: 6 Rounds Total. Medals given out to the top 20 places. 2nd – Dakota Tyree: 5 points. 3rd – Hunter Chrysler: 4.5 points. 27th – Kyle Carter: 2 points. 30th – Thomas Letchworth.

“It has been an exciting season so far,” Hizey said. “I am excited to see what happens next.”

The team’s next tournament will be December 6th, 2014 at Erie Elementary.
