A Day Full of Electricity and Magnetism

Weir 4th Graders and teacher Mrs. Wells traveled to the Greenbush Science Lab on December 5th for a day of experimenting with electricity and magnetism.

The day started by using buzz magnets in anticipation of what would follow. They hypothesized about what was attracted to magnets and what was not. The class was surprised to learn the dollar bill is attracted to a magnet as a result of the magnetic ink used in the money.

The 4th grade also learned how strong electromagnets can be when they tried to pull 2 apart.

After lunch, they experimented with balloons and static electricity, used energy balls to show how we can conduct electricity, and tried to determine if objects that are conductors of electricity are also attracted to magnets.

Finally, they set up both series circuits and parallel circuits.

A very productive day was had by all.
