Southeast Debate Team Captures 2nd Place

NEWS RELEASE FROM GARY LEIKER, SOUTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM SPONSOR

The Debate Team captured 2nd place at the Colgan Debate Tournament on Saturday, October 4. Nine schools were in attendance. Southeast finished the five-round tournament edging out Fort Scott High School for the 2nd place trophy. Pittsburg High School finished in 1st place.

In open division, seniors Kim Collins and David Willis debated their way to a 4-1 record, with 21 speaker points. Kim and David tied with another two-person team from Pittsburg, just barely losing out on the tiebreaker by one opposition win. They ended in 5th place. Open division was very competitive with the top 6 teams all having identical 4-1 records, and were only separated by three speaker points.

The freshmen novice team of Charlee Meyer and Robyn Nabors, in only their second debate tournament, amassed a 4-1 record, with 25 speaker points. Charlee and Robyn won 5th place. Also debating in the tournament was the open division team of Ashleigh Fleck and Ryley Slifka, and the novice teams of Ryan Gath and Travis Myrick, Will Chrysler and Jordan Wilson, and Caitlin Low and Logan Skeen.

The Debate Team travels next to Fort Scott on October 17-18.
