Southeast students participate in driver safety course at Kansas Speedway
This past weekend three Southeast High School students took part in a Safe Driving course provided by the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.
On Saturday USD 247 Special Resource Officer Dallas Pulliam took seniors Vince Geier, Jarod Watson and Jake Zortz to the Speedway, where they were put in hazardous driving situations that were in a controlled environment.
“The students discussed driving situations with members of the Kansas Highway Patrol and practiced avoiding danger while driving with instructors in the car with them,” Deputy Pulliam said. “The students now have experience driving on different kinds of terrain and how braking on each is different. They also feel more confident about driving and avoiding objects that may appear in the road.”
Deputy Pulliam said while only three members of the Southeast Seatbelts Are For Everyone (SAFE) program were able to participate in Saturday’s event, there are four other members: Zoey Ball, Robin Neighbors, Olivia Powell and Bailey Ulery.
Deputy Pulliam said this is the first time they have participated in the event but if it returns to Kansas they hope to do it again.
