Southeast opened its season
last Friday with a 58-0 loss against
Baxter Springs, and the Lancers
play their home opener in Week 2
against Three Rivers League rival
Jayhawk-Linn at 7 p.m. Friday.
“The kids didn’t quit,” South-
east coach Nick Cheney said.
“You’ve got to give Baxter credit.
They’ve got a real good quarter-
back, they’ve got a couple good
receivers, they’ve got some skill
kids and they’ve got 45 kids out.
They have a weight program.
They hired a guy two years
ago, and it’s paying dividends
now. They’re doing good things.
They’re a well-coached team
and they’re a big 3A school.
“You play who you play, and
it doesn’t really matter. I’m just
glad we came out, and a lot of kids
weren’t injured and everybody’s
healthy. Sometimes, you just get
beat. They’re a good team.”
Colton Lawrence threw for
108 yards on 6-of-12 passing and
finished with 16 yards on two
attempts, while Braxton Hudson
led the Lancers with 17 yards
on five carries, Trey Galindo
caught two passes for 72 yards
and Tyler Warner added four
catches for 40 yards.
“We had 140 yards passing,
and that was against their var-
sity team,” Cheney said. “We
had 20-25 yards rushing. That
doesn’t sound like very good
stats when you get beat that bad,
but we held them three times
in the first half to a field goal
instead of touchdowns. There’s
some bright spots.”
Defensively, Matthew Slay-
ton, Blayke Logan and Cayne
Windsor each made three stops,
Slayton and Galindo each forced
a fumble, Aden Smith recovered
two fumbles and Slayton, Smith
and Jayce Stewart each came up
with one quarterback sack.
Jayhawk-Linn will not be any
easier an opponent than Baxter
Springs for the Lancers.
“They beat Northeast (52-14)
handily the other night, and
they’ve got some skill kids,”
Cheney said. “We’ll show up,
we’ll play the best we can and
see what happens.
“In the first half and in the sec-
ond half, they just lined up in the I
and ran the ball. They had a run-
ning clock second half. (Dustin)
Johnson coaches up there and he
does a great job. He was at Pleas-
anton a few years back, then he
went to Fort Scott (Community
College) as offensive coordinator.
He spreads it around. He’s telling
us that he’s just going to run the I
all night long, but he runs twins
and trips and bubble screens and
lots of stuff. He uses the whole
field, so it will be a lot like Bax-
ter’s offense.”
The Jayhawks finished 8-2
overall, went unbeaten through
four Three Rivers contests, and
lost to St. Mary’s Colgan in the
second round of the Class 1A
playoffs last season.
The Lancers were already
back at task early in the week in
preparation for the Jayhawks.
“They were positive (Monday)
at practice,” Cheney said. “We
went over a bunch of stuff. Little
errors on covering routes, peo-
ple score. We understand that
as coaches. This isn’t good, but
some of the kids getting beaten
(on routes) are sophomores.
They’re going to learn, and so
will seniors. We’ll be all right.
