TRIO Educational Talent Search
TRIO STEM Academy visited Kansas City University Medical School in Joplin on Nov. 30. The goal of the trip for STEM Academy students focused on providing them the opportunity to learn how to prepare in both high school and in undergraduate studies to meet admission requirements, and what to expect academically during medical school. They received a private admissions presentation and tour of both the medical and dental schools.
Former TRIO student and Oswego High graduate Elijah Elliott mentored the students, speaking to them about his educational path and fielding questions as well. He is currently a KCU medical student and will graduate in May. Lunch was at the Social Restaurant followed by virtual reality at Pennington Station.
SHS TRIO participants joined other local high schools for TRIO Day at PSU on Dec. 6. The day included an admissions presentation and tours of campus, including academic buildings, dormitories, the Kansas Technology Center, and the indoor athletic training facility and lunch was provided in Gibson Dining Hall. Southeast graduates and current PSU students Anna Thompson (senior social work); Audrey Jacobs (freshman pre-med); and Cassie Swezey (sophomore psychology) served on the TRIO panel and covered informative topics for our group, including how TRIO helped form their educational journey. They also answered questions that students had about college life.
