SJHS Chess Club takes 1st place at Columbus Tournament

Three Southeast Junior High School students participated in a chess tournament at Columbus Central School this past Saturday. Due to the number of students participating, the 53 total students participating played in a combined section – K-8 and K-12 players. After the final round the two sections were again split for awards. The Lancers were tied with Royster Middle School for 1st place with 5.5 points but following a tiebreaker, Southeast came away with 1st place.

“Our junior high team had some tough competition on Saturday, playing students from elementary all the way through seniors in high school, who had been playing for quite a while,” said Lancer Chess Coach Ryan Hizey. “I was very proud of how our junior high players did playing the tough competition that they faced. The Southeast Jr. High Chess Team brought home their very first 1st place trophy. This was very exciting.”

Hizey said all 10 students in the K-8 division received a medal and the top 20 players were awarded medals in the K-12 section; and, the top three teams in both grade divisions were awarded trophies.

The Southeast Junior High Chess Team will take part in a tournament at Northeast High School in Arma on Saturday January 24.
