Fifty degree weather, gusty winds and steady rains didn’t dampen the spirits of the Lancer Track & Field team at the Class 3A Regionals held Friday in Leon, Kansas as seven Southeast student-athletes qualified for the State Meet.
Laura Yancey took 1st in Javelin and placed 2nd in Shot. Ryan Rakestraw took 2nd place in both the 300 Meter Hurdles and the High Jump. Dietrich Smith took 2nd place in the 800 Meters, Adam Martinie took 3rd in the 200 Meter Dash, and Katie Yancey took 3rd in the High Jump. Rakestraw, Smith, and Tim Clausen and Jacob Wyckoff took 3rd place in the Boys 4×800.
“They all competed really well”, said Southeast Coach Nick Cheney. “It’s always exciting to see the seniors especially go out and give it their all and Ryan, Tim, and the Yancey twins did that.”
While Coach Cheney was excited for their overall performance he admitted he hoped the final event of the day is added motivation for the team at State, as well as next year.
The Southeast Boys 4×400 Relay was 3/10th’s of a second behind 4th place – leaving them short of qualifying for state.
“Maybe that letdown will motivate them to practice even harder this week to get ready for State, and maybe the younger kids will take the offseason more seriously,” said Coach Cheney. “They were so close to qualifying – hopefully they realize how close they were.”
The State Meet will be held at Wichita State University on Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30.
