Southeast 3rd graders are learning about simple machines as part of their STEM lessons. While learning about levers, the students were divided up into groups and challenged to create a catapult using only craft sticks, rubber bands, a plastic spoon, a binder clip, a plastic cup and a clothespin.
On Wednesday they tested to see which group could launch an object the furthest. Each group chose between a candy conversation heart, a Crabby Patty heart, a marshmallow, and a plastic spiky ball.
The distance competition was won by Jude Sullivan, Julian Tompkins and Aden Smith, whose catapult launched a candy heart 27 feet and 8 inches.
