Fleck qualifies for national tournament

South Kansas NFL Congressional Debate
March 8-10, 2016

Ashleigh Fleck, senior, recently qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament. Competing in the South Kansas NFL Congressional Debate District Tournament, Ashleigh debated her way to a 2nd place finish qualifying her for the national tournament being held June 12-17 in Salt Lake City.

The district tournament was a two-day competition held at Cherryvale and Fort Scott. Sixty-five students competed in either Senate or House, with the top two in each chamber qualifying for the national tournament. Senior Will Chrysler placed 8th in Senate, while Sara Goins and Bailey Moore both advanced to the Super Session of the House, with Sara ending up in 10th place.

Ashleigh worked hard for this tournament, so it was nice to see that hard work pay off. After she got her first taste of nationals last year in Dallas, it really didn’t surprise me she would be motivated to qualify again this year. Qualifying for the national tournament, however, is really tough—there are a lot of great student competitors in our district. To qualify once is a big accomplishment. To qualify more than once is truly stellar.
