Since 1999 the Southeast Debate/Forensics team has had more than 30 national qualifiers, including 3 this year. The team was named among the top 10% of schools nationwide in 2013-14, and had a state champion and two national qualifiers in 2014-15.
On Friday, during the opening assembly of the district tournament at Pittsburg High School, Southeast was presented with the NSDA’s Leading Chapter Award for the Southeast Kansas NFL District, the highest honor awarded to individual chapters by the organization.
“Only one school in each district wins this award each year,” Southeast Debate/Forensics Coach Gary Leiker posted on Facebook. “Southeast had to wait 50 years! Unbeknownst to me, but Southeast belonged to the NFL (now known as the NSDA) for a brief period way back in the 1960’s, and then was inactive up until I started coaching in 2000. This award is in honor of all my students, both past and present.”
“So to all my debate/forensics kids (you will always be my kids) thank you for helping us make history. This award belongs to all of you!”
