Southeast FBLA chapter members took a tour of Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City today. The Park is the permanent home of two-time MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City and the NCAA Division II National Football Championship game (for you PSU Gorilla fans).
While students were not allowed on the grass, they did get to walk around the field, see the trainers room, a locker room (with the coolest seats anyone there had ever seen), the boot room (where cleats of various colors are stored), where press conferences are held and the press box.
The tour was shown the various suites throughout the stadium and was told that in addition to the soccer games and D2 football championship, they hold numerous other events, ranging from hosting business meetings and conferences, to prom and even the occasional wedding.
The tour guide also talked a little about the jobs at the stadium and some of the perks – the gentleman giving the tour, for example, received a ring as well when Sporting KC won their most recent championship. While there are only around 20 staff at the stadium on a day-to-day basis, there are around 800 part-timers on game day.
His advice for getting into the profession was simple: take advantage of internships to learn as many things as you can and network – meet as many people as you can and stay in contact with them.
