Career Day a hit at Southeast Elementary

It was a great day at Friday’s Career Day at Southeast Elementary School. Area businesses were asked to briefly show Preschool through 4th grade students what they do. It was almost a carnival-like atmosphere as groups of students bounced from station to station, learning how each business uses reading and math on a day-to-day basis.

Thanks to the following for coming out: Katherine Bandy of the Weir Public Library; Ed Caffrey of the Pittsburg State University Communication Department; Lindsay Davis of Sonic; Khesleen Dimanche of KSN 16 TV; Kim Fowler of CHC Dental Clinic; Jim Jones of the Weir Post Office; Carrie Low of The Cake Shed; Dr. Laura Morland of Girard Animal Hospital; Elishia Rousselle and Bryan Wyckoff of Labette Bank; Julie Traxson of 4-H; David Waugh of Waugh Farming; Buddy Andrews, Delmer Blaylock, Kirk Denny, Knut Farstvedt, Jack Johnson for bringing their “hot rods”; Fort Scott Community College of Cosmotology (Pittsburg branch); Greenbush; Kansas Wildlife and Parks; West Mineral Fire Deparment; USD 247 School Resource Officer Dallas Pulliam and Weir Police Chief Joey Duggan; Southeast High School junior Elizabeth Fornelli and her grandfather Ken Snyder; and, to Southeast High School’s Mrs. Sonora Jones for bringing several of her FCCLA chapter members – Shi Ann Crumpacker, Katey Freeman, Kendall Hamblin, Logan Haraughty, Meredith Harris, Alaina Martinie, Lacie McCann, and Courtney Ross.

Southeast Kindergarten student Beowulf “BW” Tompkins may have found his calling as a play-by-play announcer. The Pittsburg State University Communication Department set up a way for students to watch a game and “call the game” and BW was a natural.
