This week’s rains delayed Regional Softball and Baseball games that were supposed to be played on Monday until Wednesday, and the Softball game was moved from Erie to Galena. That meant both the Southeast Softball and Baseball teams played their Class 3A Regionals 1st Round games in Galena – Softball versus Northeast, and Baseball versus Riverton, the Class 3A returning State Champions.
And both Lancer teams left Galena Wednesday night with victories.
The girls started the night off with a pitcher’s duel that was scoreless after six innings. Megan Colvin was credited with what would be the game winning RBI in the top of the 7th inning when she was walked with bases loaded. In the bottom of the 7th Colvin would finish the game striking out the last batter, Colvin’s 9th strikeout of the game. Jordann Lunsford led Southeast batters with 4 hits.
Southeast fans then moved to the baseball field, where the Lancers were facing the defending State Champion. In a tight, emotional game, the Rams and Lancers were tied at 2 at the end of the regular 7 innings. Southeast went into the bottom of the 8th with the game tied and the Rams loaded the bases, with no outs.
Cole Burdette struck out the next batter, then a failed suicide squeeze by Riverton turned into a double play for the Lancers. That sparked the Lancer batters in the top of the 9th inning.
Burdette led with a double to right field and moments later Caleb Thompson drove in Burdette and Colton Trejo to put the Lancers up 4 to 2. A brief pause in the game due to one pole of lights going out didn’t slow down Southeast, who went into the bottom of the 9th with a 6 to 2 lead, which they held onto with great pitching and great defense.
Burdette pitched a complete, 9 inning game, and threw for 11 strikeouts.
On Thursday, in the 2nd Round of the Class 3A Regionals, the Southeast girls will face Riverton at 3 p.m. in Erie; and, the Southeast boys will face Galena in Galena at 3 p.m.
UPDATED ON MAY 19 at 8:20 a.m. to address time change to baseball game. Baseball now plays at 3 p.m. in Galena.
