Thank you, School Board members

Throughout the month of January 2017 we are taking time to say “thank you” to seven extraordinary citizens in our community. Our local board of education members volunteer countless hours each year leading success in our schools! They study issues, participate in meetings, attend school activities and events and advocate on the local, state and national levels for our children.

The 2016-17 school board members for USD 247 Southeast-Cherokee are:

  • Jeff Burns: Graduated from Southeast in 1982 and has served on the board since July 1, 2013, representing Zone #5.
  • Sundown Jacobs: Graduated from Southeast in 1989 and has served on the board since July 1, 2011, representing Zone #1, and is currently the School Board Vice President.
  • Barbara Long: Graduated from Southeast in 1995 and has served on the board since June 9, 2014, representing Zone #3.
  • David Stricklin: Graduated from Southeast in 1981 and has served on the board since July 1, 2011, as the At Large representative, and is currently the School Board President.
  • John Staton: Has served on the board since August 22, 2016, representing Zone #2.
  • Jessica Wells: Has served on the board since October 23, 2014, representing Zone #6.
  • Ron Yancey: Has served on the board since January 29, 2014, representing Zone #4.

Public education is a cornerstone of American society, and a highly-valued part of our state’s history. In 1966 the people of Kansas amended our state’s constitution to specifically call for local public schools that are ‘maintained, developed and operated by locally elected boards.’ Local school board members comprise the largest body of publicly elected officials in our nation.

In our community the board of education makes decisions that impact the future of all our children. Their job is to establish a vision for our schools, then provide guidance and direction in accomplishing that vision. They ensure that our schools are accountable to the community.

The month of January marks the annual observance of School Board Recognition Month and gives us the chance to say thank you! This is a time to shine a light on how our local board prepares today’s students for success. In January, join with others throughout our district and state to salute the men and women who provide leadership for our public schools.
