Seniors Cole Burdette and Hunter Jameson, junior Jake Burns, sophomores Megan Colvin and C.J. Peacock, and now Coach David Dainty have all received honors for this Spring. The All-CNC and All-Area teams have been released, as has the All-County Baseball Team.
Coach Dainty has been named the Coach of the Year for both the 2017 Pittsburg Morning Sun All-County Baseball Team and the 2017 Craw-Kan Southeast Kansas All-Area Baseball Team.
“It’s a real honor to receive these award with so many good coaches in our area,” Coach Dainty said. “I think it represents a lot of hours put into the program, not only by myself but for the athletes at Southeast to put in so much extra time.”
For the first time in the program’s history the Southeast Baseball Team was the Regional Champion, qualifying for State. They won their first game at State, and finished 4th in the Tournament.
“I think what sets Dainty apart as a coach is his commitment to making sure the kids are loose and also maximizing the potential of everyone on the field,” said Trent Kling of MyTown Media, who helped compile the Craw-Kan All-Area list and did the play-by-play of the Southeast radio broadcasts at State for ESPN 100.7 FM.
“When you look at how the season went for Southeast, a lot of high school teams would have mailed it in after a mid-season losing streak, but Dainty was able to keep everyone loose, continue to find the best mix of players on the field for any given game, and lead them through a tough regional to state,” Kling said. “It seemed like there was an atmosphere of accountability and selflessness surrounding the team, and that’s a testament to the coaches.”
“It’s a well deserved honor,” SHS Principal Larry Malle said. “I think it confirms the fact that if you do things the right way, you put a little hard work with it, and you have a vision to bring it all together, that it shows you that you can do things – it’s great to be rewarded for that. As far as the school in general, it’s always nice to be recognized for the hard work that you do. Any time you can rise to the top as a team or as an individual in a very tough area like we have around here, it’s always a recognition of you and the kids for their hard work and the prep they put into it.”
“I’m excited about the award and am excited to see the success our baseball program can have in the future,” said Dainty, who graduated from Southeast in 2005 and was an all-state baseball player.
