Two Southeast High School Students in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Chapter traveled to Wichita for the Kansas FCCLA State Leadership Conference. Annabelle Turpen and Alyssa Zimmerman competed in the Senior Division of “Focus on Children” STAR Event. STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition and allows students to apply the skills and knowledge gained from their Family & Consumer Sciences courses in a competitive event.
Annabelle & Alyssa’s project was titled “Lancers at the Library” and started in the fall semester when the local Parents as Teachers Educator, Dacia White, was a guest speaker in the Southeast HS Parenting Class. The students learned about an annual statewide event each November called “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers”. The students decided to partner with Dacia White, and Katherine Bandy, the Weir Public Library Director to host an evening event to promote literacy among preschool students. After the November event, the students decided to continue and make this a monthly event. They held events each month from December through April for young children. The Library does plan to continue these events, with their next event being Saturday, June 9th at 10:00 AM.
Annabelle Turpen & Alyssa Zimmerman are sophomores at SHS and received a Silver Medal in their STAR Event today in Wichita.
