School Lunch Hero Day Celebrated at USD 247!

Students from kindergarten through twelfth grade gathered at Southeast High School on Wednesday, May 1st for a surprise assembly to recognize the seven members of our food service staff in honor of “School Lunch Hero Day”, which is celebrated nationwide on May 3rd. This event was to honor the women who work tirelessly to prepare school breakfast and lunch for our 500+ students each day. This event was planned to honor them, as they often go unappreciated throughout our school year.

Students in elementary school competed in a coloring/poster contest. The winner of the K-2 competition was Benson Scott, 2nd grade. The winner of the 3rd and 4th grade contest was Marley Stookey, 4th grade, and the winner of the 5-8th grade poster contest was Travis Hallam, Jr, 7th grade.

There was also a poetry contest for junior high and high school students. The winning poems were from Ethan Becker, 5th grade, who wrote “Ode to the School Chicken Nuggets”, and Brody Newswander, 12th grade, who wrote “Silent Laborers”.

The assembly showcased a video, compiling clips from students across the district expressing their appreciation, and a “pep rally” led by the 2019-2020 high school cheerleaders. The cooks were presented with customized embroidered Lancer aprons, and a keychain. There is also a banner that will be hung in each school cafeteria that has student signatures on it.

This event was organized by the high school Family & Consumer Sciences students who coordinate a monthly Take Home Meal program. They used the proceeds from this meal delivery program to fund the gifts for the cooks. The students involved in this program are Katura Amershek, Jordie Higgins, Brooke Span, Jaiden Gregory, Jalynn Warner, Kylee Harrison, and Alex Rice.

The USD 247 Food Service Director is Connie Kimzey. Southeast Elementary cooks are Tammie Taylor and Tammy Richey. The Southeast Junior High Cooks are Rosanna Ristau and Melody Brennon. The Southeast High School cooks are Gaye Clark and Amber Brown.
