Summer Programs

Summer activities are being offered to USD 247 Southeast students.  Below is a summary of each program.

Kindergarten Jump Start

Cost: FREE
Ages:  Children 5 years old with a birthday after September 1, 2015
Duration: May 23, 2016 through June 30, 2016 (no school May 30)
Days per week: 4 days per week (Monday through Thursday)
Hours: 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Breakfast and lunch will be served.  No charge to students.
Transportation will be provided.

Focuses on literacy and numeracy educational activities to help prepare students for Kindergarten.

Attendees should meet one of the following qualifiers:

  • Families live in a community with limited resources such as quality childcare, parks, playgrounds and health facilities
  • Military families
  • Low income
  • Living in a single parent home or had a teen parent
  • Developmentally or academically delayed
  • Other at-risk

Outback Survivor Camps

Cost: FREE (a grant funded program of Kansas Reading Roadmap)
Grades: Students who completed grades K,1,2,3 in 2015-16
Duration: May 23, 2016 through July 1, 2016 (No camp May 30)
Days per week: Monday through Friday
Hours: 8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Breakfast and lunch will be served. No charge to students.
Transportation will be provided.

The Kansas Reading Roadmap Summer Program combines fun with learning to help K-3 students focus on reading and math proficiency.  Each week, students who attend at least 3 days Monday through Thursday are eligible to go on that Friday’s field trip.  There is limited enrollment to the KRR Summer Program.  Applications may be submitted but students will be invited as space is available.

  • Friday, May 27 – NO TRIP – Survivor Course at SES
  • Friday, June 3 – Fantastic Caverns near Springfield, Missouri
  • Friday, June 10 – Osage Mission Museum in St. Paul
  • Friday, June 17 – Coleman Theater in Miami, Oklahoma
  • Friday, June 24 – NO TRIP – Visit from a Mad Scientist at SES
  • Friday, July 1 – Swimming & Pizza in Pittburg

4th & 5th Grade Camp

Cost: FREE
Grades:  Students who completed 4th and 5th grades in 2015-16
Duration: May 23, 2016 through July 1, 2016 (No camp May 30)
Days per week: Monday through Friday
Hours: 8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Breakfast and lunch will be served.  No charge to students.
Transportation will be provided.

Students will gain reading and math proficiency through guided practice.  Students will also enjoy physical activity daily.  Each week, students who attend at least 3 days Monday through Thursday are eligible to go on that Friday’s field trip.

S.T.E.M. Final Destination Summer

Cost: FREE
Grades: 2015-16 5th through 11th grade students
Duration: May 31, 2016 through July 22, 2016 (No Camp May 30)
Days per week: Monday through Friday
Hours: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students visit Greenbush for canoeing, fishing, ropes course and other activities. Each week, students who attend at least 3 days Monday through Thursday are eligible to go on that Friday’s field trip – in the past they have gone to zoos, amusement parks, pools, airports, museums and aquariums.  (SNEAK PEAK: A trip to Arrowhead Stadium is in the works for 2016)

There is also a “big trip” at the end of the summer: Students who attends a minimum of 28 days throughout the summer, with 10 of those days being the last 10 before the “big trip”,  allowed to go.  In the past they have gone to Silder Dollar City and Oceans/Worlds of Fun.

The summer bus picks up and drops off at the Southeast Elementary School in Weir, Southeast Junior High in Cherokee, the McCune school building, Scammon Express and West Mineral town hall.  Home pickup/drop-off may be available if resources allow.

  • Friday, June 24 – Tour at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City
  • Monday, June 27 – Greenbush (Outdoor Survival training)
  • Friday, July 1 – Swimming & Pizza in Pittburg
  • Friday, July 8 – Cosmosphere in Hutchinson
  • Monday, July 11 – Greenbush (Fishing Camp)
  • Friday, July 15 – TBA
  • Monday, July 18 – Greenbush (Ropes Course Camp)
  • Friday, July 22 – Oceans of Fun & Worlds of Fun in Kansas City
