SHS Students Attend Wellness Workshop

Miranda Hartman and McKenna Renn, Juniors at Southeast High School attended a School Wellness Conference, “Wellness Is a Blast!” at Greenbush today with Mrs. Janet Holden, FACS Teacher, and Mrs. Debbie Clawson, Assistant Principal.

The students worked on a breakout box activity and then learned more about the school wellness policy and the KESA (Kansas Education Systems Accreditation) rubrics for Responsive Culture: Component 4, Nutrition & Wellness. Students worked in teams made up of students from other schools to prioritize areas within our school that they believe we should prioritize in order for us to obtain “modeling” status on the accreditation framework.

Mrs. Clawson & Mrs. Holden heard from several panel presenters about topics including Innovative Breakfasts, Physical Activity Integration, Farm to Plate, and 365 Days of Meal Service. Mrs. Holden was a panelist sharing two innovative projects about involving students in the school wellness efforts. She shared specifically about a project where her Baking & Pastry students follow the USDA Smart Snacks in Schools guidelines to make healthy treats for holiday parties at Southeast Elementary School. The speakers shared a lot of practical implementation ideas to incorporate wellness – including brain breaks, flexible seating, school breakfast and lunch programs.
